Event Description:Sauk County is developing a plan for the Future Route of the Great Sauk State Trail (GSST). Building from the success of the 10.5-mile completed segment of the GSST that connects from Sauk City, Prairie du Sac, up to the Sauk Prairie State Recreation Area, this planning process will look to identify a route and route alternatives to extend the multi-use trail north and west to Devil's Lake State Park, Baraboo and West Baraboo, North Freedom, Rock Springs, and terminate at the start of the 400 Stat Trail in Reedsburg. The intent is to provide a safe and enjoyable recreational trail for pedestrians and bicyclists through the unique landscape of the Baraboo River and the Driftless Area. Once complete, the GSST will provide a world-class trail experience, showcasing the natural landscape and connecting communities in Sauk County.
This planning process began in January of 2023, with the County contracting with a consulting firm to lead the project. The plan is anticipated to be complete in the Summer of 2024. As a first step in the planning process, the project team has identified a study area, and split this into smaller segments for more in-depth analysis. There are ideas about some potential routes throughout the area, but at this time, all options are being explored. Included with this email, is a map of the segments being explored, along with a summary project schedule. Since the project is in the early stages, we want to make sure that people know how to provide input, as well as how to reach out directly with ideas or concerns.
Everyone is invited to learn about the project and to share ideas or concerns in a variety of ways:
· Visit the County’s project website to learn more about the study and process or to subscribe to the County’s electronic mailing for updates.
· Provide input on an interactive web map to share ideas about destinations the trail should connect to in the future, or places where you have concerns about a future trail.
· Complete a survey to help us understand the issues that are most important to you regarding this project.

It is important to note that the route options are currently being explored at a planning level. A preferred route will be developed over the next year, influenced through feedback gathered by the community (you!), funding and approval by governing bodies, followed by engineering and design, will need to occur before implementation or construction of the route begins.
